To open RAW files directly you'll need GIMP
UFRaw or
dcraw plug-ins. UFRaw (based on dcraw) has a more full featured UI, but not the most recent base code. dcraw is better for quick import of RAW photos needing minimal RAW adjustment, has better file support & great for command line use. These two plug-ins are fine for quick import, using a stand-alone full featured RAW processor beforehand IMHO is the best choice. The Canon RAW software that came with your camera is a good place to start or try, Darktable, Photoflow or RawTherapee.
I'm not sure why you can't see your folder.
