I found Gimp Chat via an icon link from Gimp Learn.

I'm a long term Gimp user, but am now working on learning better ways to use the program. Up until recently, I've done all work manually, without layers, filters, etc., mostly family photo restoration. Now I'm tempted to re-scan everything and try again with my newer skills.

Thank you in advance for all the tips you folks will provide.

Welcome to Gimp Chat, Lenny. I'm sure you will get your aim, only ask what you need to know. :)

Lenny, howdy back from the Mid-Atlantic. As a perpetual newby myself, let me suggest that Issabella's tagline is already some of the best advice on how to proceed.
