I'm new to all this. Don't have a clue, but will get there at some point. I have downloaded the GIMP program but it won't open other than a large screen of the large GIMP logo. I say it won't open, I don't know how to open it. I've gone to YouTube and tried to find an answer but just haven't found my answer. Any suggestions anyone? And thank you!

Welcome to Gimp Chat.

:jumpclap

First question; where did you get your GIMP from and what version is it?
Second; what OS are you using.

Welcome to gimp Chat mcaldwell :)

:gimp The wilber symbol is what you should be clicking on to open the program.

First thing you should see is a Gimp splash screen which shows the version
Then the bigger screen
There should be a logo on this screen (wilber) which is the canvas area.
Before you can do anything on it though you need to open a picture. File>open> then browse for your picture. You can however drag a picture onto this area too. Or to start one from scratch go to File > new > template > drop down menu to choose a size, or make one of your own size. In advanced options you can change the ppi and the background colour.
Hope I have answered any question you may have.

This looks like the default window. It should normally have a menu bar with "File" at the left. Use "File>Open" to open an existing image, or "File>New" to create an image from scratch.

If you knew nothing about Gimp, that would be a confusing video

When I started with Gimp I was used to the store bought programs that would do everything for you so when I first used Gimp I had no clue what anything did or where to start
Luckily when I was ready to just delete gimp I found a tutorial by one of your past gimpchat members who explained everything step by step
Unfortunately I dont think She is still with us, and her videos are about 3 or 4 versions ago

Anyway If you watch that pretending you know nothing about Gimp, I think it would be confusing

I must agree that the youtube videos by Gimp Tricks are some of the best beginner videos as everything is completely explained and shown, step by step.

Yep, I still remember her explaining how the clear or transparent layers worked and how to change the layer up and down
She had a whole video explaining what all the features in the toolbox worked, making it easy for an idiot like me to understand

Since no further word has come from Jolie or her family about her illness in several years, I fear the worst.

I agree Norseman, I only watched a little of the video before posting it and I think the title on the video should be changed.

Gimp Tricks has some good tutorials :)
Is that Jolies channel. I wonder if she can be contacted through it? She hasn't uploaded anything for 6-7 years

Yes, Gimp Tricks is Jolie's Channel but I do not believe that Jolie can be contacted, unless perhaps through a medium. I miss her.
