Hi all!

I'm somewhere between a beginner and intermediate when it comes to using GIMP. I have always been interested in art and design - odd that my career path took me into electronics instead! I first came across GIMP about 4 years ago when I was running Windows and "played around" with it. Now I'm on a Linux machine and exploring the possibilities of free software, GIMP, art and design, and seeing where my creativity can lead me.

For me one of the most attractive things about creating art on the computer is that I never seemed to develop the ability to draw straight lines and smooth curves by hand - and I could never color inside the lines either. :hehe With GIMP I don't have those problems.

It's pretty cool to see an image or animation on TV or the Internet, even printed images, and think "I can make something like that in GIMP."

I hope I can learn something from all of you.

Hey Bob,
Welcome to GC! You sound a little like me! I loved art, but got my degrees in Electronics & Programming, as well as 4 cert's for water treatment. My true love (and addiction) is my art and photography and Gimp is my drug of choice. I been using Gimp forever and I am constantly learning new things, simply by coming here!

You're in for a ton of fun here!

No doubt! That's interesting - I was bitten by the photo bug in high school. I never got over it (thankfully) but it has morphed into so much more over the years.

Just like my interest in electronics led me to computers - thanks, US Navy - and that in turn led me to programming. Unfortunately, I'm not certified or degreed in anything, I'm just a hacker (in the original sense :) ) with some book learning behind him. Odd that Uncle Sam will let a teenager work on the electronics of multi-million dollar combat aircraft, but you've got to be degreed and certified six ways from Sunday to do the same job in the civilian world! I also found out too late that my community college credits weren't acceptable at nearly any other institution of higher learning. Maybe someday if I get my life organized properly I can try again. 20/20 hindsight!

In the meantime I'll just soak up what I can and hopefully make a meaningful contribution. :bigthup

We really have a lot in common! I worked for 10 years, at ITT Avionics on the ECM systems for combat aircraft! Small world!!

Hmm, how about that? My naval rating was AQ - Aviation Fire Control Technician. Basically we were responsible for all the systems between the pilot's "pickle button" and the weapon. We were starting to get more into the EW/ECM side when my enlistment ended, as our aircraft were being upgraded for the (then) new HARM missiles and associated systems. Concurrently, the Navy was transitioning to the F/A-18 from the A-7E, which is the aircraft I worked on. I seemed to have temporarily lost my sanity and chucked a perfectly good start at a career and instead of re-enlisting, I got out and got married. :rofl

The F/A-18 is the one I got physically dragged out of (long story).

I'll bet it is a "long story."

Not sure. If I :rofl enough I can't tell the :cry apart... as you said - and I agree - "long story." The short version is I dug myself a very deep hole and haven't yet got completely out.
