Help!

I am a novice GIMP user and have been working with GIMP 2.6 and have been well impressed. I use Seagate Theatre Media players and everything I have done edit wise has been fine. I recently purchased a a new much faster computer so that I can process larger photo and video files much quicker. In loading Gimp I moved up to 2.8. Since doing so when I view the photos on my media player I get a warning progressive-DCT dropdown on every edited picture saved as a .jpg. If I load the saved photo in 2.6 and resave as a .jpeg then the message does not appear but the save progress green bar races across the screen until it arrives at the other end when it takes a considerable amount of time to complete the save. The picture seems to be degraded but this also varies on the TV used for display.

I guess this problem is caused by new GIMP defaults in saving .jpg's but I cannot find the route to checking the parameter set up for saving .jpg's.

Can anyone help either by pointing me towards an existing thread or give me step by step instructions to locate and change the save settings and which settings to change.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, I have a talent for missing the obvious when looking at menu's probably something to do with age!

When you save images in GIMP with jpg extension (Image>Export) dialog window pops up where you can change the quality settings. Click on Advanced Options > Optimization, Progressive, Subsampling options, DCT method. DCT by default is Integer, other choices are Fast Integer and Floating Point. After finding settings that works for you, save them as Default Settings.

As I said I suffer from menu blindness!!! I had not noticed the Advanced button in the box I had merely concentrated on the quality and export buttons.

My photography happens in fits and starts as I have a bunch of hobbies but I am retired and travel a great deal. Last year I clocked up 40,000 miles flying around the world. I get to see some incredible sights and many iconic views, mind you most times the shoot is very opportunistic as the light is what it is when you arrive. I live in Providenciales in the Turks & Caicos Islands in the Caribbean. Thanks very much for your reply. People who don't use GIMP very often sometimes get overwhelmed by its busy user interface. It's quite easy to overlook something.

Those are lovely photos. I have not been able to travel much, I would love to be able to travel all over and see the world!

When I accessed Advanced I just turned off Progressive and everything else works fine. Files saved with progressive switched on now work fine with decent def. Yes the user interface can look a bit intimidating but I find the best way to learn is just to bumble through and sort out the challenges as you meet them with on line tutorials or when I get really stuck and can’t see the wood for the trees shout for help. Anyway all sorted!

My main hobbies are anything to do with the internal combustion engine, from cars to helicopters, micro lights to my first love, big bikes. I have just completed a trip down through the West Country of England and then on down through France to the Loire Valley. From there on to Burgundy and then to Vienne. From Vienne to Lake Annercy to Chamonix and under Mt. Blanc into Italy. Up over and around the St Bernardino Pass snow line before cutting back over the mountains to France. Then heading to Geneva and along Lake Lucerne before heading back to England. I then flew to my second home in Florida and up to Atlanta where I hired another big bike and rode up through Georgia, North Carolina and down the Dragons Tail to Tennessee. But that’s the beauty of being retired, Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman have a lot to answer for. The inspiration for such trips, and there have been many, literally came about from watching the movie the bucklist!

Lovely photos, From someone who leaves in the UK hope you had a pleasant stay and the west country is a lovely place.

As it happens I had a great time in the west country, I lived in Totnes for 25 years, beautiful in every respect except the weather! Still I love flying gliders over Dartmoor and riding trials bikes nr Bideford. Ferrari's are a passion but I have been accused of liking other Italian exotics like the white one I drove around the UAE. One of the best ways to enjoy somewhere different for me is riding a big bike, I guess its the freedom and feeling as though you are part of the machine. A couple of weeks ago I rode around Georgia, North Carolina and Tennessee to get to a piece of road called the Dragon's Tail, 318 bends in 11 miles, the sun shone and there were no troublesome policemen!

Getting back to GIMP where do I find the best tutorial on the use of colours I get completely lost?
