New GImp VER 2.8.20

Still 20 official releases (well 10 even number official releases). It's time for 2.10; hopefully this will be the last release for 2.8x which has been a great program, but I want to see high bit depth ability not to mention the other innovations that is the promise of 2.10x.

I would like to report that Gimp 2.8.20 works quite well on my iMac here.
Using 2 monitors, single window and color picker is no problem. (so far, so good))

El Capitan 10.11.6

No pre-installed G’mic.
I usually end up with problems when I try to install it but may try it on a copy of Gimp.

Seems fine on a Windows 10 64-bit PC, although I just today also downloaded and installed a new script (the 'Parellax' (spellng?)) one, very good indeed - except when I first used it I put a big photo (4000 x 2666 px) as the background and set 'Scroll x' to 8... well, about an hour later I took a screenshot of the size of this monster in memory ... (WOW!)

On WinXP (Core 2 Duo, 2 Gb DDR2 Ram), installing it over a previous 2.8.18 installation, the 32bit version seem to work fine.

With the versions after 2.8.6 I also had the old "Queries new Plug-ins at every startup" problem (gimp took over two minutes to start), now with 2.8.20 it seem to be solved (or maybe they have speed up something else which minimized the problem).

I'm so happy to report that the problem that has plagued my use of nearly every versions of Gimp 2.8.x , that made it wait for nearly 2 minutes overall before Gimp was usable due to the Gimp launch staying stuck at script-fu.exe for a minute doing nothing (according to task manager) is no more on my old XP system

Gimp 2.8.20 with all my plugins finally load as fast as my old Gimp 2.6 did, only in a dozen of seconds, no more need to delete the script-fu.exe in order to get decent loading time again.

Fantastic work Gimp devs !

The user filter is what hangs with my launch; I tolerate it because I do occasionally use it.

Edit: actually, user filter part now near instantaneous; Script-fu is the slow part but only around 8 to 12 seconds (didn't actually time it that accurately).

Hi everyone,

I'm very new to using Gimp. I just downloaded it the other day so that I could create a template to use within the Front Rush website for sending out emails to recruits for college athletics. The Front Rush team has a video that shows how to create these templates by using Gimp. My issue is that I need to use the Layer via Copy function the person in the video uses and my version, Gimp 2.8.20 on a 2013 MacBook Pro, says that I have the plug-in on my computer but I can't figure out how to get it to work. I have the Python-Fu > Console menu show up on the Filters tab (after hours of searching for how to get this thing to work) and reading this and not being able to figure out how to extract the file, etc. I don't understand the Installation Instructions part:

This is all clearly over my head so if someone can help explain how to do this or if there is a better way to get the Layer via Copy/Cut function to work within Gimp, I will greatly appreciate it!

Hi jck13

Not sure about Macs (using windows myself) but to extract the file use a file extractor like 7-Zip, just extract the file then place said file in the gimp folder of your user account, something like yourname/gimp2.8/plugins .. re-start gimp and it should be there. Hope that helps (if anyone's more au fait with Macs, they might be able to be more specific..)

The filter is located under Layer in the image main menu.
In Linux you usually have to set permissions for a python script. Possibly this is the case with Mac?
