I am unable to reproduce the issues you mentioned. Here is what I did.

Opened a blank (white) canvas. Then I clicked on bucket-fill. The cursor turned into a bucket. Similarly when I clicked on the eyedropper, the cursor turned into an eyedropper.

To be able to reproduce the issues, can you provide a step-by-step, with each step what you did and what you expected?

2-ton it looks like you need to select the layer (with the color) then select the color picker. Select the right color.
Then select the layer you want to color.

tried again...I think my color picker is broken, lol. I went into my gimp 2.6 to do my little project and it worked fine. Will go try to write down exactly what I am doing...and then it will probably work.

***Ok, here is exactly what I did.
Open my 2.7 Gimp for mac
File open > recently used > Logo_apple_color.png
Add transparent layer on top of apple layer
select colored apple layer
brush tool
click to change foreground color
in color dialog box click on color picker...nada, my cursor doesn't change no matter where I try to click on the screen, and the color in the foreground box color doesn't change.
I can manually change color in the color dialog box and use the brush on any layer

Ahh, OK now we are talking.

This is a known issue. I thought this was fixed (and I think it is in the Win version - see previous posts on the Win version). But apparently it is a problem here. The work around is to pick the color first and then the brush. So, the sequence is:
Open my 2.7 Gimp for mac
File open > recently used > Logo_apple_color.png
Add transparent layer on top of apple layer
select colored apple layer
Select eyedropper > Select color
click to change foreground color
brush tool

Aha, works to use the toolbox eyedropper. Thanks, I would never have tried it that way on my own.

Not a problem. It revealed an issue that I thought was solved. What do you know.

Even in Gimp-2.6.12 i get this...
Sometimes when i pick a color with the eyedropper the color palette will open and then close quickly.
If i re open it by choosing the foreground color that color is still chosen but didn't show as the foreground color.
I then need to click the colored square in the palette for it to choose it correctly.
Pretty weird, but it only happens at certain times. Could be a RAM issue i suppose.

Have you tried G'MIC to see if it's functioning properly in your machine?

Yes I have used gmic and have not run across any noticeable problems...I say noticeable because I am not sure if what I am doing is correct or not, but at least it 'seems' to work ok. I did have a problem today with using select>rounded rectangle...it shuts down my gimp altogether! I can use the select tool in the toolbox, and use rounded option, but if I go to the menu select>rounded rect. that is when it shuts it all down. Also, even though I am using the toolbox color picker, it still doesn't always seem to work just right. I don't have the steps because I kept fumbling around until I managed to get the color number and paste it into the color dialog to get the foreground in that color.

Gmic running fine for me so far, I've not run all the filters but thinking about this now good time as any to see all the filters and what they can do! I was going to test the refresh for any newer filters if anyone as uploaded any.

Don't worry about doing it correct or not since they are 100s of filters and it is unlikely that anyone does everyone of them correctly.

I will test out the select > rounded rect.

Would you be able to document your steps for color picker next time you try it?

As I told WW, this is all very valuable information and I appreciate all your help.

I just started going down the list ...Starting with Arrays and Frames...Those work. I did have little issue with the UI at the beginning but have been unable to reproduce it. Here's what I recall I did prior to the error.

1) opened 512x512 png file. Then Filter>G'MIC
2) Ran the Regular Array, default settings.
3) Walked away from the computer and returned in say 10-15mins.
4) Switched programs to Safari and surfed looking for an item to download.
5) Funny enough, I downloaded Wilber, the Gimp Mascot
6) Switched back to Gimp
7) File>Open... (to find the file I just downloaded)
8) I noticed immediately the UI lost its focus. The 2 x 2 Array on the workspace suddenly snapped to one pic...I wonder to myself why it "reverted" but find out later this was not case. When I moved the mouse the Pic of the regular array result would move around with the mouse. I could not select any file in the open browser.
9) Tried to "cancel" out of the browser but unable as none of the buttons active.

When I restarted Gimp, I did a test for all the Array and Frame filters, one right after the other, each ran fine. (just doing the defaults to save time) And never had that problem again with the UI losing its focus.

I did have an issue with the file browser the other night. I've not been able to reproduce it today however...but last night...

1) working with 2712 × 1432 png file.
2) made a few changes...blur, layered..
3) needed it as .png again, so File>Export...
4) inserted cursor at end of file name to type "working" (not including the quotes)
5) then the last character of the file name would jump about on me. In the example, the word "working" would end up between the "1" and the "5". Picture doesn't show that, only that I did not intent the space between the "1" and the "5".

Anyways...not been able to repro this but this did happen several times as I was testing it, only today is just fine. I used it about 23 times as I as testing the G'MIC filters.

I will be sure to keep track of what I am doing now when using any color picker before I confuse myself with work-a-rounds!

Hi WW 7 2-ton,

Based on your comments, it seems that some of the time the Gimp UI has some issues with the OS. It also seems to be a combination of issues when it happens. Pretty hard to track this down. I will continue to try and improve the infrastructure and isolate Gimp innards from the OS.

I will be hoping that you can resolve the issue of the tool and dialog boxes don't always sit on top of all the windows! I am enjoying using this version...so I will continue to use it most of the time and try to keep track of any big issues.

I know it's annoying. It's an issue on MS Windows too. Matter of fact there was whole debate back in the Red Hat/Fedora days on whether Windows should open in the back or on top.

PS: I am glad you and WW are liking Gimp on Mac. I am am enjoying using it on my Mac Pro as well. However, does not look like there is a lot of demand for Gimp on Mac since we don't see anyone else asking for it here.

Most definitely enjoying it. Gimp has come a long way on the mac. I tried using it way back in the early years for it. This was back when X window thing came around and I found it unusable and just too darn slow. This is by far a treat to use!

FYI... I can ask around for a few more mac testers for you. I really don't know how many of us there are in this forum. I can at least ask in other venues, I can ask they come here if you prefer to have all reports on this tread.
