well, it's ZZZZZ time here, and I have an early shift tomorrow, so I will have to wait until tomorrow night to try and get screen shots and load times. If it wasn't for the hiding windows, I would say it's ready for prime time! The slowness could have been because it was the first time using it, will check on it tomorrow. (BTW, 'hiding behind' doesn't happen in my 2.6)

No problems. :)

The hiding doesn't happen on 2.6 probably because it's not a native mac version and it's all running inside one X-window?

Hi Partha,

Installation all fine for me on 10.6.8. snowleopard (there seems a bit of confusion over mac versions in the thread). Upgrade to Lion is imminent for me.

It all seems pretty stable to me. I can't break it so far! Thanks for fixing the layers reposition thingy.

It seems very slightly slower than your previous, but i will do a couple of comparisons at the weekend as it could well be that i am slightly slower.

In terms of ready for release i suppose the only thing is the windows opening in the background, i guess for some people this would be tricky.. you would no doubt get a fair few responses saying that this or that did not work simply because it does not open in front. I guess if you made this REALLY clear with the release then you may be answering fewer responses!

Thanks again for your work on this.

Hi, Partha.

I followed your suggestion and began to test. I'm using Snow Leopard 10.6.8 (iMac 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo) and don't plan to update to Lion in a short time. All is fine, but the main problem here is that some of the most interesting plugins (Refocus-it and those related to Resynthesizer) are really very slow on the images I usually work on (jpg photos straight out of my camera, which is 12 MP, 4000x3000 pixels), so slow that I always give up and stop using. Of course, scaling the image at a much lower resolution (say, 20% of the original size) helps and works, but I would really need to use these plugins at full resolution, if possible…
I don't have Refocus-it on my other GIMP version (the one by lisanet, with X11), but I have Resynthesizer now also on that one and, though slow, it runs a little faster there, I don't know why.

You are absolutely right. The confusion is my doing. :( I meant the Darwin kernel (10.8.0) while Snow Leopard version is indeed 10.6.8. My apologies.

I would definitely like to see the comparisons you plan. Thanks!!

I am sorry Mole. See my response at the beginning of the thread. You need Snow-Leopard or higher. I don't know anything about 10.6.8. Are you in a position to update to Lion which came out awhile ago? Just a thought.

Partha - Thanks for the quick response. But I thought Snow-Leopard is the same as 10.6??

Mole, Snow-Leopard is 10.8.0. :(

Bad to quote yourself. :(

My mistake. I meant Darwin kernel 10.8.0 while Snow Leopard is indeed 10.6.8.

Mole, please send me the log.

Thanks,
Partha

Forest,

Thanks for testing!

Does it run fast enough that you don't quit? Can you provide some speed comparisons?

I will try to check all this and provide some tests in the following week (I can't do it today and perhaps not tomorrow, really, terribly busy at work).

just quick note about running a filter or two...I ran resynth on one of the D80 sample photos.. at 7360x4912 size. used default settings. It took approx 40mins to complete. This with my OS on external Sata HD and flipping between Gimp and my web browser as it did it's thing.

Same pic but running the G'mIc filter ellipsionism (spelling?) took a long time and never completed (I had to bail, but the computer went to sleep at one point and am thinking the job was somehow lost. I didn't see any hd activity)...I waited about 6 hours. I know from past testing that filter takes a long time to compute. So I chose it to test the file size. For another jpg, I used a file roughly 960x940? I was done in a few mins.

I'll try other filters later, but I for sure wanted to see how that ellipsionism filer worked on the monster file from nikon. Tomorrow or next day, I'll look at other filter on same nikon jpg.

Take care...have a great day!

I ran into another little problem. I cannot get the filter eyedropper to work when using any filter that lets you choose colors. Also haven't tried one window yet, but will probably make that default because I have to resize the workspace as the toolboxes are always on top.

Well, McGimp is back. We now have McGimp 2.8 ready for your using pleasure. The bugs should be ironed out thanks to Mitch (Lead Gimp developer) who fixed the vexing issue we were having with rounded rectangle select and friends.

2-ton & WW, if you want to test (or taste) this version, please let me know? You have been my long suffering beta testers and thank you very much for that!! :clap :clap

I'd be interested in testing this version. I've been using Lisanet version of 2.8 but it is a bit flakey I think.

I have to apologize to Partha for digressing. Cool that you are giving the Mac folks the gift you already have given us Windows guys Partha. That's what's cool about GIMP. GIMP brings Macs, PCs, and Linux users all together. That's why eventually PS will fail since they only trying to get the big kids (and make them go broke to boot; lol). United we stand and am greatful for the Mac and Linux guys too. :)

I've been trying to do a PSE 8 course...flew through the beginners course with some frustration that I was seemingly going over old ground...
get tot he next level and I am thinking...WTF!!!...so many times I am tempted to use GIMP for the exercises as it is so simple to use by comparison

you load it exactly the same as the previous version I believe
via /Users/yourhomefolder/Library/Application Support/Gimp/plug-ins

Akky,

I posted the link around the top of this thread. Please let me know if you are unable to find it.

I am happy to see that you want to try it since you are one of the lead Mac users here :)

Thanks,
Partha

Please don't do that. :(

G'MIC is included in my build.

Partha, I will try to get more filters used tonight, but until the color picker works, I don't thinks it's totally ready for prime time because that's sort of a basic function.
Pauline, all I did was download Partha's 2.8, twice as the first time failed because of my dsl I think, and it unzipped itself and loaded up into the applications and put an icon on my dock. All automatic! I had taken out old versions, and only kept my 2.6 that shows up as Gimp in the files, and this new one shows up as Gimp 2.8. It took a while for the initial start up but now comes up fairly quickly and works fine. I am on Snow Leopard and I think you are on Lion, I don't know if that makes a difference. I haven't checked yet if I can put in new scripts or plug-ins...maybe tonight I can try, but G'Mic seems to work fine and I think I even got it to update but not sure as I just updated without checking the numbers first.

2-ton, this is a problem in the Windows version too and I believe a bug report has been filed. In the meantime, do what you did before (see the previous thread). Simply use the eye-dropper to select the color first and then use the filter?

Yes, it should work just fine on Lion. Please let me know if you have issues on Lion.

Thanks,
