I use PClinuxOS, have done for a few years now. Same as Gentoo it is a 'rolling' release.
The maintainers there are on the ball today. A brand new Gimp 2.8.8

There is "oops I clicked on save instead of export".

The cage tool does seem a touch quicker or it might just be subjective.

So far everything working (had a little problem with a couple of plugins but all sorted)

@rich2005,
Lucky you.
I could d/l the source and compile it myself but I'd rather wait until the Gentoo devs make it available.
Otherwise "portage" (Gentoo's package mangement) wouldn't be aware of it.
Gerard.

Gentoo now carries it too.
Late yesterday afternoon it was added to their repository.
Upgraded today.
Gerard.

Installed GIMP 2.8.8 from ftp site. It launches fine, but during the launch, I get errors with libglib-2.0-0. Not sure the solution. Guess I will have to tolerate this until they fix it. :)

The GIMP website explains why they are not using Sourceforge now: GIMP Windows Installers move from Sourceforge to ftp.gimp.org

As it's been a while i had not launched Gimp without plugins+scripts+brushes, i decided to count the loading time on my window version of 2.8.8.
I obtained roughly 37 seconds.

Then i launched my old portable version of 2.6.12 on which i had added the GPS brush pack and it loaded in 5 or 6 seconds.

Big difference.

After adding all my plugins/brush(much more than only GPS)/scripts, 2.8.8 loading time went up to 1 minute (at least i was expecting the increase there).
(it's not new to 2.8.8 , in 2.8.6 i noticed long loading time too, made worse by the rescanning of every single plugin everytime, something fortunately fixed and that was fixed in the 2.8.6 Partha version)

Has anyone noticed such big increase of loading time (5/6 seconds for 2.6.12 vs 37 seconds for default 2.8.8) since the 2.6.x era or is that just a win32 version of Gimp problem ?

Below's what I posted at GIMPusers.

The problem turns out not with GIMP itself, but with the User Filter. Below are the errors. Maybe the User filter needs to be re-compiled. Sorry for not analyzing the errors earler (work weekend nights and last night was my Friday if you will and tired I was then and just installed the GIMP 2.8.8 before hitting the sack). Still not sure how the new version breaks the User Filter and I use this filter often enough that I hope there's a fix for it shortly. :)

Just got the GIMP 2.8.8 update in Fedora.

Image

Here are the changes from the official change log.

Overview of Changes from GIMP 2.8.6 to GIMP 2.8.8
=================================================

Core:
- Make sure indexed images always have a colormap
- Fix language selection via preferences on Windows
- Don't crash on setting a large text size

GUI:
- Keep the same image active when switching between MWM and SWM
- Make sure all dockables are properly resizable (particularly shrinkable) (yay!!!)
- Add links to jump directly to Save/Export from the Export/Save file extension warning dialogs

Libgimp:
- Fix GimpPickButton on OSX

Plug-ins:
- Properly document plug-in-autocrop-layer's PDB interface
- Fix importing of indexed BMPs

General:
- Fix lots of places to use GIO to get proper file sizes and times on windows
- Add an AppData file for GIMP
- Backport lcms2 support from master, because lcms1 is not getting bug fixes any longer
- Lots of bug fixes
- Lots of translation updates

Looks great! :yes

Fedora 18 (and above) users can grab the new GIMP version from the updates-testing repository.

yum --enablerepo=updates-testing update gimp

Just confirmed; removed path for User Filter (via GIMP interface for plugins) and all's well except, of course, the User Filter is no longer. Need to fix this. Maybe someone can recompile it or tell me how too; would be much appreciated. :)

@Lylejk

If you already have a building environment to compile gimp and gmic it should be not too hard compile other gimp plugin

Bigger problem may be found what has to be corrected in the plugin code , why it works with the previous version but not anymore ,... and fix it
