Can't add text

Hi...New to Gimp. I select text box and try to add text it doesn't work. It seems like Gimp is using my keystrokes as shortcuts i.e. zoom etc. Example: I try and type "advertise" all that shows in the box is av.

If you are on OSX Mavericks or later, upgrade to Gimp 2.8.14.

This happened to me, and since I never use shortcuts anyway, I went into preferences and eliminated all the shortcuts. It was the only way I could figure out how to fix it.
