I used to use gimp, a really old version that allowed you to change the size and opacity of any chosen brush with slidey bars (I am very technical) in the toolbox. In the new version, 2.8.14, the slidey bars (seriously what are those even called) don't exist and I can not find any option to change the brush size or opacity anywhere. There is no dockable dialogues list under the window options which is where I would usually go to add this stuff to the toolbox. If I click on the chosen brush twice I get a small menu that is entirely greyed out, it looks like it has options to change size and opacity in a really inconvenient way but the options are locked.

How do I change the size and opacity of brushes? It's such a simple thing to do but the new version won't let me.

The new adjustment bars are designed to adjust more than one way. You can click the top inside the bar (up arrow icon) and you have your instant adjustment. Click the top inside and hold you can slide the bar also. Click and hold when the icon changes to a two directional arrow and you can slide and adjust the spinner to get more delicate size positions.
