Making Textured Logo Darker

Hello,
I am in need of some help. I have this design, but need the text to be "full". Basically, there is a "worn" look on the text in this image and I need to fill in the small white holes within the lettering. Any ideas?

I did this by first doing a Color To Alpha on the white on the original image.
Making a duplicate of the image and working on the duplicate layer below the original layer.
I did an Alpha to Selection and Grew the selection by 1, filled the selection with black.
Turned of the selection then did another Alpha to Selection a second time on this layer and Shrunk this selection by 1.
Inverted the selection and Cleared the outer portion of the black text using this selection.
Then used the Fuzzy Select Tool :fuzzsel

on the original top layer, to make a selection of the outer most portion of this layer.
Making sure to drag the Fuzzy Select Tool, while holding the left mouse button, ever so slightly to increase the tools threshold of the selection, to ensure that the selection is as close to the text outer edge as possible.
Then going back to the lower layer and clear this selection from the lower layer.

I'm sure there's more then a few methods that one might use to accomplish this.
