Removing a defocused wire mesh

Hi all,
I have shot this picture through a wire mesh and I would like to make the mesh less apparent.
For the sky it's not very hard - for the rest of the image I can't figure it out.
Any tips?

I first tried to use fast fourier transform (w/ inverse) technique but that doesn't work with this time screening. I then did the following. I dupped, then auto-equalized the top layer set to grain Extract to create a convolution layer. I inverted this layer and set to overlay (duplicated and adjusted opacity to taste). I then cleaned up the sky. Not a perfect solution by any stretch. Maybe someone else here has a better solution.

And some additional tweaks (increased saturation and G'MIC's Freaky Details selectively). Still could use a sky change, but not in the mood for that at the moment.

Playing around last night on my netbook. Just finished when the battery ran out

Similar to lylejk

Duplicated layer
Desaturated the duplicate. Pulled the color curve up to make much lighter
Put the layer into hard light mode.
To try and keep as much of the foreground as possible, added a layer mask.

Difficult to remove those marks in the foreground but not too noticeable.
Replacing the sky? Could be better than a simple gradient.

Ocirne94, I did an experiment with your image.

I did the following:
Blur the original with an anisotropic blur (G'MIC "Smooth [anisotropic]), to keep the coarse details of the image. (maybe another blur is better)
Extract this blur from the original (grain extract).
Wavelet decompose on the grain extract.
Remove the fine details wavelet residuals and keep the coarse residual.
Extract this wavelet residual from the original image.
thereafter G'MIC "Banding denoise

It isn't perfect but perhaps this can help you?

Same procedure as above (without "Banding denoise"), but now with bilateral filter. Now you can't see the wire mesh, but there are also less details, because smoother.
