GIF Works Only in Some Applications

GIMP Version: 2.8.14
Operating System: Mac OS
OS Version: Sierra 10.12.3
GIMP Experience: New User

I've been trying to figure out the whole animated meme thing by making a GIF, it works when I preview the animation, it works when I view it on my phone, email, text message, Google Drive and when I drag the file to my browser (Chrome), it even works in the preview here, but if I try to post it to Tumblr or Facebook it does not work. Any ideas for me?

Post to Tumblr of Facebook. Then download from that site and see what you have. Is it still a gif, or has the site converted it to a jpg or something?

Good idea, thanks. Here's what I found when I posted to Tumblr. It's still in GIF format, but all the layers are gone. It is now a single image.

Then complain to facebook/tumblr... Typically these sites recompress images they consider too big (this can happen to plain JPEG/PNG).

You can now and Facebook is full of them.

a simple solution is to host it on a site on which it works, like here (I guess it is not against the site rules as long as you open a thread about the gif you've made) and just copy past the image direction to facebook.

You could be axed by an admin. In one forum I maintained, 80% of the traffic was due to a very popular image. I had to change its URL.

I will try posting it on a WordPress site and then share the link. I wouldn't host here, seems like poor netiquette and something about how Google Drive hosts the files doesn't allow for proper embedding or previews. Thanks for the suggestions all. Just wanted to make sure I didn't screw something up in GIMP when I made it.

Oh, I know exactly what you're talking about, and it actually has a simple answer as far as Tumblr is concerned. Tumblr simply doesn't allow gifs that have too big of a file size: specifically, gifs larger than 2MB have problems. If the gif is too big, it will be converted into a still image. I've dealt with this problem before, you just have to change compression settings or the number of frames in the gif until it's the right size.

Thank you! I just took out every other frame, it's 2.9MB now and it works on, Twitter and Tumblr now, also made one that is 1.9MB but still can't crack Facebook. I'll keep at it because I'm stubborn. Now it's time to get to the real work of making more memes.
