Hey, first post here.
my install of gimp 2.10.2 (from flatpack as available on the official site) does not detect the g'mic plugin.

i did put the gmic_gimp_qt for gimp 2.10 file in the plugins folder, but gimp does not list it in filters.
the default folder listed in preferences does not do it
/home/user/.var/app/org.gimp.GIMP/config/GIMP/2.10/plug-ins

neither with other custom folders added to preferences.


My default 2.8 that comes with the OS and krita 4 both detect their respective g'mic plugins flawlessly... am i missing something?

Yes, The flatpak Gimp is essentially sandboxed and runs in its own space. Self-contained and does not use existing files.

Generally scripts and python plugins will work but some compiled plugins that have certain dependencies will fail. It is possible to do a little gentle hacking and get some working.

This is my report when starting to use a flatpak, kubuntu 16.04 so same base as Mint 18.

If you are able to copy files as root then you will get Gmic GTK working. The QT version runs into conflicts. I have updated the zipped archive you can find from above recently, so gmic looks like this. (Lyles latest wish fulfilled)



I am sure that someone will be along to suggest using an appimage, the choice is yours.

Thanks for such a great answer! I'll look into it and try to make it work, but by the looks of it , an appimage seems a little more hassle free than the flatpak one maybe? There is no other option offered in the official page, do you know of any 2.10 up to date appimage version?

What I consider (minor) annoyances. Several plugins that I would never use heal-transparency / enlarge & sharpen / sharpen by synthesis - a minor issue. A couple of script-fu's Hilstrative and Wakui (WHY?) but generally the extras are ok.

Then a snag if you ever have to import SVG images. The included Nufraw plugin stops SVG's from loading. Being an appimage no way to disable nufraw. Keep your old Gimp 2.8 just in case

Makes its own Gimp profile in ~./config/GIMP-AppImage/2.10
If you do not want your existing gimp 2.8 resources to be copied over, disable your ~/.gimp-2.8 folder (say ./ggimp-2.8) before first run, then rename back.
