flame fractal

Hello again:

I'm a gimp and g'mic user since 2.6 and I really enjoyed using the flame fractal filter to make images. For some reason though, at least since the last update to gimp 2.10 the flame fractal windows are so tiny they are not readable on my device.

I don't know if it's Gimp itself that changed that or if it's my machine, which has an rtx5070ti and 2500x1600 resolution.

Is there a solution to this problem? I haven't used Gimp in almost a year because I simply cannot see the images created by the fractal flame filter.

The fractal is clearly visible in the image I've shared but, on my screen it's not decipherable like they used to be. I used to get some really beautiful images but now- too small.

File comment: I hope you can see how small the fractal windows are in this example image. They are super tiny and I can't create anything with them

I think it still works. If you look at this GimpChat topic you will get ideas on how it was used.

I just did this on 2.10.38 but you need a black canvas to do anything.

You need to ask MareroQ, he seems to beable to get the preview windows larger for most filters

Yes it is possible to recompile the plug-in with larger preview windows. Here is a link to all of the re compiled plug-ins. For Gimp-2.10.38. Should work for any version of Gimp-2.10 though. :)

I think the point has been missed. There is a 'preview' window but also other preview windows on the Edit tab. It's old software from the early 90's apparently. For those who don't do fractals RENDERING is involved. The rendering outputs to the Gimp canvass. That's were the fractal comes to life, not in the little preview window.

I included the Edit box as well this time. The outer window edges are expandable on this system but not the preview windows. If Fractal Flame is re-compiled with larger preview windows then I think longer rendering would have to take place in the preview windows. This method of only using a small preview is how I make 3d fractal animations.

BTW. Like a lot of early fractal software it's only 2D. If you really want to make fractals I recommend Mandelbulber 2. For that you need a gamer or graphics workstation because of all the rendering. I'm glad this topic came up because it brings us back to art rendering rather than crypto currency.

Yes the edit windows are small - can anything be done about it?
I cannot see them properly so just pick the 'shape' that looks pleasing and may have to render them several times before you get one you like.

Hi Rod, I wonder how the Zoom slider on the Camera tab is working on your recompiled version? Does it use the new window size?
If so you have solved the OP issue.

Yes camera>zoom works fine. But either MareroQ, or SamJ deserves the credit for the compile. :) I haven't compiled anything for a long time now. However the edit preview windows may be slightly larger but not by much. Also these are only available for Windows 64 bit as far as i know.

Yes I found that instead of rendering your fractal before you see what you have, try the camera zoom. Just takes a little more going back and forth before you get what you want; then render it.

So many thanks all way round! I enjoy the flame fractal filter because it's very easy to use and it will generate some really amazing "images" (sort of like seeing faces in a cloud).

I do use Mandelbulb3d, UltraFractal and Mandlebulber but, the Gimp flame fractal filter is simply a blast to use. I downloaded the large preview zip file (thanks for the link and the file!) and hoping this helps.

Thanks again!
