sure a lot of work

try Colors/Components/decompose

mind that the output will be in greyscale mode, to give to gimp full editing capacities has to be changed in RGB (from image/image mode)

to reassemble in a color image with its channels you may use Colors/Components/compose

Command is "Layer->Decompose RGB" and ignores alpha channel.
