I want to be able to create a web page background, about 1200px x 800px with the appearance of one of the bronze name plate panels from the National 9/11 Memorial in New York City. Something like this without the raindrops (or with the raindrops!)

My muse wants a view straight down onto the names. I know hoe to do engraved text but I can't find a suitable background online.

Anybody got any ideas?

Without the rain drop it's a uniform background with just a bit of color gradient due to lighting. Easy to emulate by creating a gradient and sampling the colors at regular intervals along the height(*).

(*) while it is not documented, the gradient editor supports drag&drop of colors: drop on the color display and it creates a new mid point with both sides set to the color, drop near one of the midpoint handles (black triangles) and it resets both sides to that color.

you could also fill the text with the yellowish-gold and then apply an inner shadow or satin in brown
