GIMP Version: 2.8.4
Operating System: Windows
OS Version: Vista
GIMP Experience: Beginner Level


I have an image that I was attempting to alter the text on but it wouldn't allow me so I deleted it and tried to create my own text box, which I can do but when I type I can see the text on the right in the layers but cannot see it on my image. I have been to several "help" sites and tried some of what they were suggesting to others but still nothing. What do I need to do to make the text visible on the image? Thanks!

Maybe you can't see it because it is obscured by other non-transparent layers - try to move text layer to the top of the layer stack.
Other possible reason - text color is the same as background color of the layer below.
Attaching zipped XCF file would certainly help us to help you

I'm so new to this, and no Photoshop knowledge, and that is what it was- the layer was closer to the bottom and once moved up, it showed up. Thank you so much!

Hi, I was about to answer your question about the dotted line around the edge, but you have edited that post and now the question has gone...
Therefore I assume you determined that the dotted line was just showing the layer boundaries (which are not visible when you export the image).
Either select a different image sized layer, or right click your text layer and choose 'layer to image size'.

Okay, was doing well, and now there is one layer I cannot alter the text on or delete to make my own text box like I did the other two. I'm not sure what step to take next. I deleted this layer but it still is showing on the image; even when I try to hide it, it will not disappear.
(I tried upload the file but it was too large)

Seems like you're having troubles with handling layers. Find a tutorial that covers the topic.
Try not to merge layers unless you're sure no further edit is necessary.
Whatever you do in GIMP happens to the active layer only (that is the highlighted one)
Right-click on text layer in layers panel and click on 'text tool' on top of drop down menu - it will be editable again
(unless you've converted it into a regular layer).
If you did convert it - make a series of undo operations (Edit-Undo or Ctrl-Z) - be careful, all your other changes will be reverted too.
