So I went out today and took some pictures of different textures, since texture brushes are something I've been meaning to incorporate into my painting but hadn't really gotten around to it, you know? So I looked at some tutorials, thought 'great that looks easy!'. Ha..ha...not.

So my problem is that I've done everything that I know of to correctly make a grayscale, gbr brush, but it won't show up in my brush list. :/

Here's what I know I've done:
-It's a flattened image
-I converted it to greyscale using image > mode > greyscale
-It is saved as file type .gbr
-The background I put it on is #ffffff (I did make the brush edges transparent so it fades into the white before I merged the image...dunno if that contributes at all?)
-I did place it in the GIMP brushes folder (a whole merry go round in itself to find, since I don't know anything about linux)
-Refreshed the brush list, then restarted gimp, then restarted my computer...still no brush.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

What was the file directory you put the brush in? It's possible you put it in the wrong one which would cause it not to appear in the list. I know on Windows, for example, Gimp sometimes installs two different resource directories (this was more evident in 2.6 than 2.8 I've noticed)

I went to: /home/username/.gimp-2.6/brushes

It's the folder that's listed in preferences > folders > brushes as the gimp brush folder in the program. I tried putting the brush in my custom brush folder where I keep my downloaded brushes, but it wasn't working so I thought maybe my folder was the problem and went and found the actual gimp brush folder.

Did you give the brush a description when you saved it?

Hm...I didn't actually put in my own description, but it wasn't blank because the standard "GIMP brush" or something like that was there. I remember specifically looking at that and deciding I didn't need to change it. o.o Maybe I should have? xD

*facepalm* I discovered my mistake when I went in and made another one. I thought the 'description' was that, a description of the brush. I thought the actual Brush name would be the file name.

Aha...got 'em now.
