Repainting car parts

Hello, so im a very new user to gimp, and i was trying to change the paintjob of a car from work.
Now i tried to use the color -> map -> color exchange without very good results, and i also tried to just change the hue, also with not so good results.

I want to get the white/gray areas that have been sanded and molded into the same red/brown as the rest of the car, but just from trying with brushes and smudge i dont get a very good result. I've included the Exif info and tried to take as high resolution as my phone could, hope it makes it easier for anyone helping out

Using a layer Mask, I think would be the way to go.

Use the Color Picker to select the color you want from the car image.
Create a new layer above a copy of the original Image. (Never Work On The Original Image)
Paint over the spots you would like to add color to. No need to be precise with the painting.
Once you have roughly covered all the spots.
Add a Layer Mask to this layer, by right-clicking on the layer and selecting Add Layer Mask, set it to White Full Opacity.
Use Black to paint onto the Layer Mask, (best to use the 2. Hardness 050) as you paint with black in the layer mask. You will notice as you paint on the layer mask using black that the color will disappear.
If you make a mistake, you can replace/repair this by changing the color to White, returning to the layer mask and painting with white, which will bring the color back.

Here's a quick example made using a Layer Mask as described above.

A very quick try at just a couple of points.
Mainly clone tool, a bit of minor adjustment and smoothing with the healing tool and then a free select of the areas, feathered by 5 pixels, and a few pixels gaussian blur.

This is only about 5 minutes work. Given a couple of hours I am sure you will be able to do an excellent job.

At regular intervals, when it is looking good, save under a new name, so that if you need to you have a previous version to revert to.

Thank you, the healing brush helped alot. i just set the opacity down and it did quite some work.

Also will try more tomorrow with the mask thingy, problem is just that i cant just paint in 1 color, but ill see more about that tomorrow. Now its sleeptime, thanks again!
