All my saved files except one in Gimp have disappeared. (The ones in the 'open' dialogue) And I cannot see any pictures in any folders of pictures etc through gimp any more, they all appear empty. I have to go right through from the user name to see any.

If you are referring to what Windows calls exactly "Saved pictures", check whether you have two folders with the same name (it happended to me), combine all the pictures inside one of them and use that one (I still have two: one full of images the the other one empty). But I'm not sure you refers to this case.
If you are referring to the Gimp Document history, there is a specific entry in Preferences, maybe you unintentionally checked this off.

When I click on the folder normally from my desktop it is full of pictures still.
When I try from gimp, the folders appear empty and as I said they have gone from my saved menu in the 'open' dialogue
I may have been the one Wallace. I have restored my computer a couple times recently but it has never affected these before


@dinasset yes I have a couple of picture folders but usually there is another folder at least in one.

Picture thumbnails are likely cached (hidden thumbnails.db file IIRC), and Windows is showing the thumbnails created when the pictures were still on the disk and kept in that file. Strange disk problem that would make picture disappear, but not the cache file... Could be some nastyware that erases/hides important files. Is the disk full as usual, or has it acquired a lot of free space recently?

The real answer is opening a command prompt, navigating to the directory, and using the DIR command to check what is in there wth /A:HS (from memory) to tell it to show hidden & system files.

If the disk seems as full as usual, use the finder to search for XCF files from the top the disk hierarchy.

I do remember changing somewhere to delete thumbnails recently. I thought that was only gimp history thumbnails. Would that have made a difference?

I think I have solved the issue. It was asking for all images. NOT all files. therefore I couldn't see the folders in the picture folders. I will just add the other ones that are missing from the saved list again...Yes that has made a difference in putting 'all files' instead of 'all images'.
Am confused to why the saved list disappeared still, but doesn't matter now.
