Well that didn't work. Let me start again:
Hello Gimps:
I've included a photo of the tail section of a downed plane It will provide background for a book cover.
In the narrative, the plane is pink!
I want to add a hint of pink to my plane in the photo. Just a very light wash; the plane burned after all. And it might be best if the pink was a little mottled... eraser and smudge tool perhaps? Or the air brush tool?
This is going to take a bit of experimenting on my behalf but if someone could get me started in the right direction, I would be most appreciative.

create a new layer and put it above the subject in the stack.
then select a color as foreground, then drag it onto the new layer.
Or just pick a color and create a new layer with foreground/background color instead of transparent.
Then try some layer modes on the new (pink) layer, like overlay --- adjust with the opacity percentage...
see if that works for you..

1. Make a selection on the plane.
2. Create a new transparent layer above the plane.
3. Bucket fill the selection with red - on the new layer
4. Set the layer mode of the new layer to Overlay
5. Adjust transparency of new layer to taste

Let me work on this, I'm a newbie so I'll have a few questions for sure. But this is a great start for me. I'll let you know how far I get.

Thanks again, guys. This is working out just fine but still experimenting. And a final question, if I may:
When you use Bucket Fill to add the red to the new layer, did you then add a Layer Mask to delete the unwanted areas of red (the background), or is there a feature of Bucket Fill that I’m missing where it only fills to the outside edge of the plane?

You first use the selection tools to make a selection on the plane. You then bucket fill - only the area enclosed by the selection is filled.

Okay Blighty... now I got it!
