Just curious as to how to make custom gradients and save them. I was unable to figure out how to export gradients. I did manage to make my own by copying existing gradients using a text editor and then editing them in Gimp. This does work, but seems so convoluted. I was wondering if I had missed something obvious....

You would think you could export as a .ggr, but that doesn't work.

Under the Gradients Menu for the Gradients Tab, there are two standard functions allowing you to create a new or amend a current gradient.

For my part, I normally create my custom gradients using a script (Sample gradient along a path) or a TIn Tran plug-in (SVG Gradients) - I have attached them both for you in the zip folder below. When installed they will both appear in the Gradients Menu for the Gradients Tab.

Another way is to make a palette first with the colours in the order you would like in your gradient.
Most Gimp have inbuilt - right click on your palette - palette to gradient. I turn most of my palettes into gradients.

Use the gradient tool to start a gradient. The default black to white will do. Click on the Start point and change the colour. Click on the End point and change the colour. Click in between to create a new stop and set the colour. Add more stops as required.

This gradient will show as the first gradient in the list, called Custom. Select it and click on "Duplicate this gradient". Give it a new name. Saved.

FWIW - someone asked if it is possible to have an area of transparency in a gradient. Of course it is possible, this is one way using the gradient editor https://youtu.be/PeyoLLqa-sU and applies equally for more complex gradients just keep splitting it.

....or the easy way. Use gmic
