I have a photo of my handwrting using a black biro on white copier paper.

I have imported the photo into gimp and in the "Layers" dialogue box have added an "alpha-channel".

I have then selected the "fuzzy selection tool" by pressing the "u" key, and clicked on the white background.
This selects the white background.
I then press the delete key to remove all the white background.
This removes all the white background as expected.

It does not however remove all the white trapped inside the letters "o", "d", "p", "e", "B" etc.

So I then have to laboriously click and select the white background trapped inside each letter to delete it.

Is there a way to make all instances of the selected background colour dissappear in one go?

Did you try "Select by Color"?

If you choose that one, after you have the selection it's normally useful to grow the selection by 1
