Help Requested

GIMP Version: 2.6.11
Operating System: Windows
OS Version: XP - SP3
GIMP Experience: Beginner Level

Hello,
I am new to Gimp and could use your suggestions on what I need and how to set things up. The main function of this program for me is to get my Tiff images ready to be shown on my website and/or printed. I use a Canon 1Ds mkii and shoot in the raw format and then use DPP to convert to Tiff.
My images consist of B&W, color as well as converting some of them to Photo-art. For the painting aspects I have Paint X as well as PE4 but read somewhere that Gimp also has a painting feature. My B&W images are going to have a Selenium tone applied to them but at the moment I can't find an easy method of doing this. I used to use CS2 which had a Selenium preset that was excellent for my needs but I don't have access to it any more so I need to start over.
These are the basic things I want to do with my images and knowing this are there any plug-ins, scripts whatever, you can suggest to help facilitate my efforts as well as make Gimp easier and more efficient to work with. Thank you for any and all help.

First off, welcome to gimpchat!

Try uploading some examples of what you want to do with gimp, and I'm sure we can help you a lot better. GIMP does have some painting features, as well as some awesome addins to help.

As Alex says, you're probably going to get more responses if you post a particular problem you're trying to solve.

Personally I don't use much in the way of scripts and plug-ins when processing my photos, but this is a good place for help on creating photo based art.

i use UFRaw to import my canon raw files into gimp. once in gimp you can save to your desired format (tif).

There is a selenium gradient included here: http://registry.gimp.org/node/250

With that you can do a ->color->map->sample colorize to create a false selenium tint.

Cool to see you found us raven4ns. Again, Sample Colorize, imo, is a good way to create this using colors that match what you desire. Also, you can try Split Studio (http://registry.gimp.org/node/21370).

Wow Rob; you converted all those gradients from GIMP-Gurus Sample Colorize tut to actually gradients. Cool (and thanks).

Thank you everyone for your suggestions. The ask for assistance was intended to find out about plug-ins etc., like what MareroQ mentioned, that would improve my basic Gimp. This is why I outlined how I intended to use Gimp in the event that some of you are using it in the same fashion. There seems to be a lot of scripts, plug-ins etc available for it, most of which I have no use for. It seemed to me this was a good way to weed those out and focus on the ones that offered an increase in efficiency as well as effectiveness.
My computer skills are very rudimentary, unfortunately, so asking for help from those with the skills and knowledge makes it easier for me to separate the wheat from the chaff. Many of you are very skilled and knowledgeable with Gimp and have come acoss plug-ins etc. that make your efforts much easier in accomplishing your tasks. If our tasks have a commonality to them then maybe I should be looking at some of the same plug-ins etc.
Now that I have everyone thoroughly confused (lol) may I express my thanks again for your help and thoughtfulness.
