I've played around with some features on Gimp but haven't as yet seen a practical use for them so I'm asking the collective intelligence (Gimp borg?) hoping to find the answers.

Sample points - is that feature just to compare 4 color samples at once or does it have a deeper purpose?

Buffers - I've fooled with them but don't see a use.

GEGL - I've read about it and think I know basically what it does but haven't found a use for it in Gimp.

Sample Points-used for finding the dark and bright points in a photo.
There is a deeper reason, Meet The Gimp has a video on it here..
http://meetthegimp.org/episode-058-whit ... black-too/
it is episode # 58

GEGL -
GIMP (actualy it stands for generic) 'E' Graphical Library, is an image processing library based on GtkObjects. This library will be designed to handle various image processing tasks needed in Gimp initially, but should be useful to other apps as well
get more info here..
http://git.gnome.org/browse/gegl/

Buffers -
The GIMP manages copying, cutting, and pasting using buffers.
http://gimp-savvy.com/BOOK/index.html?node22.html

if you check out some of the other videos on Meet The Gimp you will probably get more answers to your questions on buffering and GEGL.

enjoy! =)

I've been going to meet the gimp for a while now and have all of his saved and watched, it took me a few weeks to do it. I check his site every few days for new ones. I'll be glad when he gets his school teacher business taken care of so he can get back to the serious work of making gimp vids.

about Gegl
many of the gegl operation are samples and may duplicate what already offered by gimp

But others are quite interesting a example is C2G:
its pourpose is make a convertion from colours to black and white more close to that of human eyes ...and it does

but even more interesting is for me its artistic use, i like use it to correct the greyscale and then to add back the original colours
well...i got the idea from here http://www.flickr.com/groups/gimpusers/ ... search=c2g

and this is a example

BEFORE

AFTER

the grainy look was my choice it could be easily avoided...and you can find much more and maybe better use on that link above

trick is simple
1 duplicate the layer
2 apply c2g to the dup
3 change dup layer mode to VALUE

(to boost color you may duplicate again the original and place on top in soft light mode)
