I am a Windoze user, trying to help someone with Gimp on a Mac. He's having a problem with scripts and patterns. He put's the files in the scripts and patterns folders, but they don't show up in Gimp. If anyone could tell me roughly what directories to use and what is involved in making sure the files are accessable/unblocked

gimp will tell you
just load gimp enter in Edit/preferences/folder/ script (or Edit/preferences/folder/plugin ) and you will see the default locations

and BTW there is not any need to know where are the gimp brush folders for script plugin etc...you may just create new folder and use the Preference to add them

the advantage of create new folder is that even in case he will need in a future to make a new clean install of gimp he will not loose his add on

I knew this held true for Windows. I never thought about it for Mac! Thanks for waking me up on this! Now to find out about the blocks on the files.

you didn't wrote about but as simple guess, Mac may block files that have "read only" in the propriety or are in read only folders.

Also gimp may set some folder as writable (and so other as not writable ) in case you will see again in preferences
In case the block works only when gimp is on....as example may block the save of new brushes from clipboard in case any of brush folders is writable

Maybe the term "Block" is misleading, as I don't use Mac. Is there a setting on the files to make them accessable? I am thinking that there is a permissions setting somewhere? A setting that allows a user to execute a file. In Windows I can set a file's permissions, and one setting is "Read & Execute".

No As far i know
may be problem to add files (as brushes) in a read only brush folder ,and the block may be from gimp (if the folder is set as no writable in preferences ) and/or in the folder proprieties...but should be no needed give permission to execute files as in linux

Anyway the file proprieties works as on Windows :
if both left and right click are enabled (it is a option in the mouse preferences,in old MAC mouses were quite peculiar and so the right click was not enabled as default,not sure with last mac ) just right click as usual look proprieties, and ...in case permission is " read only " you may just uncheck and see if that does the trick
