I'm using Gimp 2.8.4, win 32, Flame works OK.
I'm guessing it might be a 64 bit issue, maybe someone else will chime in.

It works. You need to select the colormap. I always create a black layer and then a gradient filled layer and use the gradient filled layer as colormap. :)
