GIMP Version: 2.6.11
Operating System: Linux
OS Version: XP - SP3
GIMP Experience: Beginner Level

Hi,

Just figured out how to do an animated .gif which plays fine in the gimp but when I import it into lightworks it shows as a single image. "Loop forever" is checked and I've chosen "one frame per layer". Now, I don't even know if this is supposed to produce a single or multiple files. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Greetings and :welcome to GIMP Chat!

I'm not sure if you are asking a GIMP question or a lightworks question. However, an animated GIF is a single file, with multiple layers. If you want to export the individual layers of an animated GIF as separate images, you'll need to use a script1 script2 or it can be done with the GAP plugin.

Hope that helps!

Hi GnuTux,

That information is helpful. As I'm a beginner could you or anyone advise me on which would be the easiest to use, script1, script2 or the GAP plugin. And, is there a program for linux that would play the single file "as is" besides the gimp?

Thanks!

Sorry, I misread your info. I saw the OS version: XP - SP3 and assumed you were using Windows. I see now that you stated you were using Linux. What version of Linux & Desktop Environment are you using?

You can display the animated GIF using Eye of GNOME (Eye of MATE) or Image Viewer (gpicview), as well as a variety of other image viewers in Linux. You can also open the GIF in your web browser for viewing. Just File/Open and browse to the GIF.

When exporting an animated GIF in GIMP, ensure you check the "As animation" option.

The easiest method to save individual layers as separate images would be to use the first script.

1) Download script1: export-layers.scm
2) Copy the script: export-layers.scm into your .gimp-2.6/scripts folder.
3) Restart GIMP
4) Open the animated GIF in GIMP.
5) Select File/Layers, then browse and select the output folder you would like to use
6) Click OK

This will write each layer in the GIF to a separate image file in your output folder.
