ADDENDUM: Finally got gmic working (with Dream smoothing). Good grief what a bumpy road.
I understand there's going to be improvements in future versions of gmic and apparently the improvements are sorely needed.
I want to thank everyone here for helping me out with all the great tips and information.
I know someone's going to be asking what I did to fix this so I'll be working on an explanation and I'll post here when it's ready.
