Wow! I think both solutions by Saulgoode & Wallace are great methods to achieve the result the OP was after.

This is true,

I am already clear on how to perform the bump and displacement mapping. I can already see the 'look' from just applying the map. I had also already gone in and created a 2nd t-shirt layer with all of the color removed.

However steps #2 & #3 are what i'm trying to figure out (within the Gimp convention)

Here's a quick recap of his steps:

Step#1
He applies the displacement map

Step#2
Step 2 he talks about "double clicking on the layer to open up the layer style dialogue" (4:36 -5:12 )
This appears to simply be some way to further edit the layer in question, in this case it being the design itself intended to go over the t-shirt.

It's this section that offer's the ability to remove some of the darker areas which in term allows the 'textures' and 'folds' of the t-shirt to come thru the actual design itself.

This is the extra step after the bump and/or displacement mapping has been performed, I am looking for something equivalent in Gimp to apply step #2.

Step#3
The last and final step (5:15-6:20) he adds a 2nd layer of the design, but with the elements of the desaturated t-shirt layer and rides the opacity for 'authenticity' for the overall mock-up.

Being a relatively new user to Gimp still, I am a bit confused about which actual commands within Gimp to use to perform the last step.

Hopefully this gives more clarity.

Unfortunately just looking at the screenshot will not give clarity. Hopefully some of you responding had an opportunity to see the actual video before it was removed.

I don't want to post random posts just to make the minimum 5 post count. Eventually I will re-post the link up.

Anybody?

Gimp doesn't use "layer styles". Instead we use layer modes, bump-mapping and layer displacements.
What's being done in the video with the layer styles dialog is a combination of something akin to bump-mapping and layer modes.
Layer displacement as well as bump mapping can produce the same kind of results as what is being applied to the image using the layer style dialog and PS.

**EDIT

Hey Wallace & Saul,

Thanks guys!

(i just saw your posts and examples ...)

Wallace I think your example looks awesome by the way :bigthup

Questions:

Which one of the steps either of you made in your examples represents the 3rd step made in the photoshop tutorial? (meaning what is the equivalent in Gimp?)

Also, is there any chance anyone can make a quick screencast demonstrating each step taken? (if you have time, I just learn faster when i see things in action step by step...)

Thanks again guys :cool

I can put together a video showing how I achieved the results seen in my example. However, some PS tutorials don't always have exact equivalent actions in Gimp.
The single action performed in this PS video using "Layer style", doesn't seem to have any real equivalent, that I can find. This is where the video splits PS users and Gimp users apart.
I'll work on posting a video showing what I did.

For step 3, you probably want to take your desaturated bump map layer and pop it over the top of your design layer, then grain merge (layer mode) and slide out the opacity (guessing around 60%, maybe even less) until it looks wavy but not overly so. That's how your shadows and highlights will appear more defined on the finished design.

***Oh, and Wallace. Yes, to all your suggestions.

If you click the full editor at the bottom, you will see all the smiles at the left of your screen.

Here's the tut I put together to try and explain the steps I use in creating this type of effect.

You did a nice job on the video and a nice voice to go along with it. BTW, I can't get it to go into large screen when I am watching a u-tube from here, I clicked the u-tube button and it still won't go.
I have a problem reading the settings and where you pointer is on the dark theme.
Anyway, cool

Thanks Molly, sorry about not being able to watch it in full screen. I haven't a clue why that might be an issue. I hope you can figure out what's wrong.
My voice seems to come and go. :hehe

That's good!
I wonder what's up with Molly's web browser, if it is that?

I have never been able to poem them in full screen for months now. Maybe it is a setting in my fedora that has to be tweaked.
