Try deleting this part of the gtkrc code.

style "user-font"
{
font_name="comic sans ms 10"
}
widget_class "*" style "user-font"

just remove it all and try it again.

It has to be the binary messing things up for you.
You can try taking it out of the bin folder, but some of the themes will not work.
Namely the better ones with round buttons and darker themes.Most of the Auroras.

Should yours work without it?
I have no theme still and I just removed it from Bin and just put it right into the GIMP 2.7 folder, and there is no change in theme

Can anyone else get this to work with Vista?

Willy you should just remove the entire install so i can test it further to work on your platform.
I am pretty sure it's the binary that you can not run in Vista.I do not know why though.

Just remove the binary from the bin folder, and the gtkrc file from user docs and the one you re-placed in the program directory.
Restart Gimp and the gtkrc will re-write itself.Then you will probably have to go to Edit/Pref/Themes to re-establish your old theme.You may also have to re-start Gimp.
That should get you back to your old install of your theme you had.

OR - if you made a backup of the old gtkrc file re-place mine with the old backup (be sure the name is gtkrc), and not gtkrc_backup.

You can leave the DLL engines and theme folders they won't harm anything.

No but i am going to do some research on the binary and see which systems it should work on.

This is pretty much no longer needed.Not with Gimp-2.8 any ways.
Just take the gtkrc file from any theme folder and replace the original one in your UserFolder\.gimp-2.8 folder and it will work.All needed dll's are there already.You won't get any fancy loading bars or rounded buttons, just the color theme.But it (Aurora Midnight) looks okay. :)

There is also

Thanks! Unfortunately i had installed a gimpthemes.msi which is a gimp theme selector, which included the "Aurora Midnight" which i like a lot.
There were also some engines e.g. libaurora.dll.
With this theme i get a strange behaviour in the document index box. The files are only shown when i hover them.
Same is with layers or channels
So should i delete the libaurora.dll or is it part of GIMP 2.8?

You are exactly correct. The dll is no longer supported in that version of GTK.
Get rid of the DLL file and your menus will go back to normal. :)
But keep the theme folders with their individual gtkrc files as you can still use those.
In fact i would dump all the DLL files the theme selector installed.
You will not have a fancy loader or buttons but the colors look good still.And everything is readable.

Here are a few screenshots of the Gimp-2.8 with no DLL file added to the engines folder.

After Load

Button Effects

Menu items hover color

And all the dialogs stay visible.Which is most important. ;)

Still a disturbing nitpick: the buttons and sliders look kind of ugly oldfashioned, square and flat.
What i've seen e.g. in the Gtk2 Theme Selector they should be rounded.
The sliders and buttons in my Windows XP home edition SP3 ARE rounded.

Well for me have 33 dll engines in the folder and it ensures that many themes look great. However I have found th Aurora dll engine to be broken. If you can find themes that work with the Murrine engine they seem to work fine. I'll zip up the engine and corresponding themes to see if you can find any that work for you.

The engine that works the best is the pixmap. I found a theme that looks like Aurora Midnight. It is called the Azenis theme.
Now I had to change the gtkrc and panelrc for it to work
Download this file to your desktop and change the file extension to .zip instead of .png and READ THE README!!!!!!
Image
IF you have trouble with this file PM me. Also you can edit the images inside the Azenis folder.

I get an error from GimpProxy gimp-2.8.exe "Abbild fehlerhaft" (which translated to English means "image faulty")
"libcrux-engine.dll is not a valid Windows file"

I've deleted this dll - file and nevertheless the theme seems to work as expected.
Don't know the purpose of the libcrux-engine.dll and why it works without it.
But maybe the job of the libcrux-engine.dll is done by another dll which is part of GIMP 2.8 ?

Thanks! Nice looking theme with great own graphic elements (sliders, knobs, buttons, effects, etc.)

Where did you put it? In the engines folder?

Yes, as described in the README.txt i've put it into C:\Programme\GIMP 2\lib\gtk-2.0\2.10.0\engines
("Programme" is the German analog to "Program Files")

Hmm.....that is odd. Mine is in there and it works fine. Well it was used I think for other parts of the system when used as a GNOME theme. PS you can change the images as well to suit you....
