GIMP shuts down when I try to scale a layer

Is this for a reason? Whenever I try to scale a layer (one I'm using to create an effect or filter) it sort of just freezes and shuts down. If its a normal layer with an image, it works perfectly fine. Oh, and it only happens when I try to scale a layer to make it larger, if I make it smaller, everything goes well.

Some help would really come in handy. Thanks!

I haven't run into that but when scaling an image up to a larger size it usually gets pixilated and doesn't look good, scaling down works well though.
I am sure someone will be able to help you with your main question.

Patd004 your not giving much information, could you let us know your operating system,gimp version
and the original/new dimension you are trying to achieve.

Are you trying to scale the layer size larger than the canvas size?
If so increase the canvas size to the intended layer size first.

They already mentioned, "If its a normal layer with an image, it works perfectly fine.". There must be something else preventing the layer resize and as you said they're, "not giving much information". Maybe the Locks pixels button is in use and they are trying to use a script on the layer?
