Following a discussion elsewhere I played with the ear-off menus. On Windows (even in a Virtual box), you can click on the menu item to have Gimp execute the action right away.

But on the Linux side, you have to click on the item to select it, then strike [enter] to execute. Without the [enter] nothing happens. Is it normal? Is is specific to my window manager? Is there a way to avoid this? It doesn't make the tear-off menus very usable.

It works OK with Ubuntu 13.10, Gimp 2.8.10.
Maybe a setting in preferences changed or needs resetting?

The tear off menu works fine just with a mouse click.

Never went any further than using the mouse click to select which tear off to use. After investigating further it seems that I too have to hit enter after selecting the item to use on the tear off.

Something to test is whether it is only the first click within the menu that does not result in command execution. For example, if instead of striking ENTER after the first item is selected, try clicking on a different command in the menu. (Perhaps the first click is merely giving the window focus.)

Another thing to test is changing your window manager to use "focus follows mouse" and see if that changes the behavior.

Tried that already... definitely not a matter of window of focus, unfortunately.

GIMP 2.8.11 in Debian 7.4 32-bit -- first click works.

Never tried the tear-offs before lol.

I've been investigating this a bit more and the behaviour of the tear off is a bit odd. Some items will work with a mouse click whilst other require a mouse click and then a strike of the enter key.

Couple examples of what I mean.


On this one everything on the list works with just a mouse click except for G'Mic which requires the enter key as well.



For this one the first four items on the list work on the mouse click. The other tools will only be selected if after clicking the item the cursor is left over the tool and enter is hit, if the cursor is moved away from the clicked tool and then enter is hit the tool will not be selected.

For the rest of the tear off menus it's a bit hit and miss as to what will work with a mouse click and what needs the enter key as well.

I am very average user and tear off menus are something I might use once in a blue moon.
Not many apps I have installed that use tear-offs. The one that I sometimes use is LibreOffice Draw.



AFAIK not a KDE thing.
Tried a notebook Bodhi E17 Gimp 2.8.10, mouse click not working.
and
My trusty old netbook, an older version of Bodhi and Gimp 2.6.8 same thing mouse click not working.

Did not see any mention here of using the spacebar as a toggle, a little more convenient than the enter key. Cursor keys go up and down the menu as well, that one maybe not so useful

Forgot to try the spacebar... definitely better (nto the same hand as the mouse).

In Fedora, I have to use the spacebar to toggle. The mouse is a no-go. My testing confirms the behavior is the same with MATE, LXDE & Compiz.
