Pattern FIll?

GIMP Version: 2.8.10
Operating System: Windows
GIMP Experience: Beginner Level

I know just enough about GIMP that I can put on the canvas the image I want to work on, and I also know how to use the fill bucket. My question is: what is the simplest way to fill an image with an outside pattern image? IOW, I've got a texture image in my computer files that I want to use as the skin on a toad I'm tessellating, but none of the procedures I found online worked. If possible, I'd like to not have to put the image into the GIMP pattern file (been there, done that, didn't work AT ALL!).

Using layer modes try overlay or multiply on the texture layer while having the frog or toad image underneath that layer. Then mask as desired.

If you open the pattern as a image and copy visible it will place the pattern image in the clipboard and you can use it to pattern fill

I know how to open the pattern as an image, yes, but no idea what "copy visible" means, sorry. Could you explain a bit more, please?

Copy visible means that it will copy the visible layer to the clipboard and when you open your patterns, you can drag or paste that into your open selection.

with your pattern opened as the active image go to Edit/Copy-Visible

More accurately... it copies the composition of the visible layers (in other words, what you see, and not just the contents of the active layer like regular Edit>Copy).

Good, OfNuts, thanx for that extra info: everything goes into my "store this" brain file, everything helps me to get a better grasp on what's going on with GIMP (it's SOOOOOO complicated, sheesh!). Seems like GIMP's almost as complex as a computer itself. {eyes wide}
