deleting stroked path

i'm very new to using the paths tool, so please be gentle. after i've stroked a path is it possible to delete the stroke but not the path? how?

also, is it possible to change the layer of a path?

Stroking the path works with any paint tool, including the eraser... you can also stroke with the paint brush in "Color erase" mode

The path is associated with the image as a whole, and not to any specific layer. When you stroke the path, the stroke is applied to the active layer, so you can stroke the path on any layer (and it's often a good idea to stroke on a distinct layer).
