Removing Layer Overlap Lines/Border

GIMP Version: 2.8.10
Operating System: Mac
GIMP Experience: Intermediate Level

Hi, I am wondering whether anyone can let me know how to remove the gray lines caused by overlapping layers on the top the question mark shown below. In order to blend the subject into the colorful background, rather than removing the subject's gray background, I decided the easiest way was to create two gray layers covering the rest of the question mark (one layer makes the subject darker). However, the layers slightly overlap which causes the gray lines in the finished product.

layer mask that will make the offending layer fade out to transparent edges might work

It seems as though these layers are not the same size as the image ie. "Layer to Image Size"?
We might better be able to help you if the xcf file for this image were available to scrutinize.

On the subject layer do Layer> Layer to Image Size then bucket-fill the new area with the same grey as the background (eg. using the "eyedropper" in the Change Foreground Color dialog to select the color).

Hi, thanks for the suggestions. However, the layer mask only partially worked.
