can't figure out save file issue

GIMP Version: 2.8.14
Operating System: Mac OS
OS Version: OS X Yosemite
GIMP Experience: Basic Level

List any ERROR messages you received:
unsupported file type

I have been trying to find an answer to my problem through the different searches but to no avail. Hopefully someone knows the answer. The problem has persisted before the last few upgrades. Here it is; after saving a file and opening it in Nikon Viewnx 2 program the file shows 'unsupported file type'. Then if I open it in another program such as Mac's 'Preview' and make a slight adjustment and then save the picture it will open ok in the Nikon program. Also I have it checked off to save the EXIF data and it does not.
Any ideas?

When you save a file in Gimp it saves as an XCF which saves all your layers. If you go File Export as Png, it will be able to be opened in other programs. If you want it to be animated, you save it as a .gif file.

Since you are mentioning unchecking "Save EXIF data" I assume you are not saving but exporting as JPG. Try unckecking the "Progressive JPEG" box instead. It is known to cause problem with some software that doesn't support the more recent (but 12-years old) version of the JPEG standard (DVD readers, LCD frames...).

Thank you Global Moderator for answering. I just now tried what you suggested and now it doesn't even appear in Nikon's program. I searched with Mac's finder and it's there in the file but won't open in Nikon's program. Before this I have tried all different ways to save it but it's always an issue with Nikon. It has to be a bug with their software.

I went back to the file in finder and changed the extension to .jpg and it opened up in Nikon's program but all the EXIF data except the date was stripped.

On Export from Gimp, select JPG, in the JPG control dialog, click advanced options, check "Save EXIF". This will export EXIF data. If you do not see the EXIF data in your Nikon software try another Mac image viewer, that will help isolate the issue.

FYI, this will not work with PNG or TIF.
