Where to find fonts for GIMP online?

GIMP Version: 2.8.6
Operating System: Windows
OS Version: Win 7
GIMP Experience: New User

Hello!

I would like to know where I may look for fonts online for GIMP. The fonts which came with GIMP are plain and I like to use more artistic and more cursive / calligraphic fonts. Anyone know of a site I can visit?

Also, once I find a nice font, how do I download it and install it?

Check out the sticky topics in the GIMP Resources Forum, specifically the topic Free True Type Fonts For Use With Gimp.

Just place the downloaded font into your GIMP fonts folder for use in GIMP. Then, from the fonts tab, click the "Rescan Installed Fonts" arrow at the bottom of the dialog or simply restart GIMP.

This reminds me of a question I never have figured out. Does Gimp use the fonts in the computer's font folder?

Yes. Details depending on the OS, if you want a font to be available to all applications and all users, place (or install) the font into the system fonts folder. If you are in a multi-user environment and want the font to be available only to GIMP, for all users, place the font into GIMP's system wide font folder.

If you want the font to be used only by GIMP for a single user, place the font into that user's GIMP fonts folder.

I have another question. I downloaded 4 fonts from 1000fonts. They are in .zip form. I'm not familiar with .zip files. They are in my downloads folder on C:

How do I unzip and place the fonts in the font folder?

First try double clicking the ZIP file. If that doesn't work install 7-Zip.
To find out where your Gimp user folder is, Edit menu | Preferences | Folders.

Right-click on the .zip file in your download folder. If you do have a suitable unzipper utility (which there should be on Windows), it will be listed in the drop-down menu.

Bedankt! Thanks. I got 7-zip and it work like a charm! I shall be sure to donate to creator of program. I put fonts in Win 7 fonts folder and GIMP now has them.

I've found dafont.com to be a great place to find fonts for Gimp.
