It's just not working correctly

GIMP Version: 2.8.14
Operating System: Windows
GIMP Experience: Basic Level

List any ERROR messages you received:
it tells me there is nothing on my clipboard to paste

I'm running windows 8.1. I had the 2.8.10 version and it was acting up so I discovered and downloaded the 2.8.14 version and it helped but I'm still having problems, just a lot of simple things it doesn't want to do.

The problem I'm having now is that when I select a section and try to cut or copy it, it says it's cutting or copying but when I try to paste the cut image it tells me that there isn't anything on the clipboard.

Can anyone tell me why it would be doing this and why it's being so disagreeable for me?

Could it be that you've made a selection on a layer that was empty/without pixels?
Have you tested to see if indeed what you're copying is within the clipboard? You can test this by making a small selection in Gimp, coping that selection and use another image editing program, like MS Paint and past it into MS Paint.

I copied and tried to paste it to another program and the thing that I had last saved before that was was it showed, so it isn't saving it.

There is a picture there, but I don't know if maybe there would be a top layer? The background is transparent and I need to change that to black.

Can you tell me how to change the background from transparent to black and combine layers (assuming there are more than one) and see if that helps?

Ok, I figured out how to lock the layers and it cut/pasted just fine. Now I'm trying to figure out how to change the background from transparent to black.

Add a layer, by right clicking on the original layer and selecting Add Layer. Move this new layer beneath your original layer, by clicking the Green Down Arrow near the bottom of the layer dialog. Then use the bucket tool to fill this layer with black

Thank you so much, that worked perfectly! I have one more question and I can actually finish this project.

My image is quite small, I made it 300 dpi so that it wouldn't pixellate when I print and of course it shrunk it considerably. I can't seem to figure out how to enlarge the picture to where I need it (about 5" high by 4" wide) and maintain that 300 so it will print the way I want it to. It seems like I'm probably missing something really simple. Is there an easy way to do this?

Scaling a small image to make it larger will cause the image to be very pixelated. It's best to scale down then it is to scale up.
