Learning About Gradients

GIMP Version: 2.8.6
Operating System: Windows
GIMP Experience: New User

This is one of my first gradients.

How do I make the transitions more blended and not so sharp? I used sinusoidal for blending mode. Is that why there is a strong line between the segments? Thanks.

to get smoothed transitions, when defining the gradient you have to set the left colour of each stripe (except the first one) equal to the right colour of the previous one, or set the right colour of each stripe (except the last one) equal to the left colour of the next one

I thought i'd try it myself and create smooth transition like you wanted.
I made a copy of the Hardedge foreground to background gradient and added segments myself and selected the colors from your image to use as my gradient colors.

Thank you! Final result. I added a filter from Artistic GIMPressionist. Played with the brush values.

Guys, would blurring do the same job? I tried to make a few myself a couple weeks ago use the G'MIC 'line to gradient' and that was the only way I could see to do it :gaah

I can't use the gradient editor.

kaatje: are you getting the hang of the gradient editor now? it took me a long time to geet used to it, but now were friends

sallyanne: blurring blends in a slightly different way, so you won't get exactly the same results as if you had a well blended gradient in the first place. that doesn't mean you can't get nice looking results by blurring though! have you tried rob a's gradient from path script? it's got some useful settings for blending the gradient.

If you enjoy working gradients, you might really enjoy this Gimp Chat tutorial on an easy way to make a custom gradient in GIMP with a Palette.

With gimp 2.8 you can just right click on a pallette and it will give you the option to save as a gradient. I have a feeling I have the other script 'gradient from path', I just got to find it.

There is a script called, sample-gradient-along-path. If you have it installed, you'll find it in the Gradient Selection Dialog.

Bedankt! Thank you all for you help. I created this after playing with Gradient, Gradient from Palette and Cubism. I call it Martian Snail Shell, LOL
