I see it's in the Ubuntu Software Center (with multiple choices but all the ones with the 31 stars look the same) and it's in the Synaptic Package Manager (with that I wondered if I should just select the Krita entry or the Krita data entry as well). And then there's the terminal. I'm not the most experienced Xubuntu guy but I do want a good version. (I'm attaching screenshots for the USC and Synaptic.) Any suggestions? Thanks.

P.S. I screwed up getting GMIC so I want to be extra careful getting Krita!

You are probably better off sticking with Krita 2.9.2 it is stable/up-to-date. Otherwise it is an Ubuntu ppa. This one in Mint 17.2 and Krita 2.9.7

does not work at the moment. (at least in linux)

Use .ora (open raster) format. Layers are saved. Snags - Text layers are rasterised.

Thanks Rich but that's a little over my head. I'm probably not ready for Krita, at least not now. So if I want to experiment with it how do I get the Krita 2.9.2?

Great video, Rich. Thanks so much. I followed all the steps (but my synaptic did not have the 'apply to all' (or whatever that was called).) And I am on a computer with a Mint 17.1 OS. Anyway, it did all the installing and Krita was in the menu but when I went to use it I got this.



I re-started the computer but it didn't help. I know the window says to run that kbuildsyoca4.exe (which I don't know where to get and aren't .exe files for Windows?) or re-install. Since I'm not in a hurry I figured I'd ask you first if you had any suggestions.

Oh, and the version I got was 1285. I'm assuming it's so old because it's Mint 17.1. (I usually am on the Xubuntu 15.04 one though.)

I can reproduce that error. Looks to me that recent Mint update breaks both the Krita versions commonly available. Sometimes I think that Mint has lost-the-plot. Maybe that is why I use PClinuxOS

What you can do is install the latest from an ubuntu ppa Mentioned ppa earlier.

The procedure would be
Uninstall krita, krita-data using synaptic
Add the ppa to the sources list. This involves opening a terminal and using the command
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:dimula73/krita

Once that is done, back to synaptic, refresh the package list, look for krita 2.9 and install it.

Works here, I know all this is difficult for a new linux user but you will get there.
