I would like a few more choices as far as brushes go. Is there anyway to get them and how would I install them? (I know how to install fonts. Is it a similar process?) Thanks!

Just google "Gimp brushes" and lots of links will appear. You can also google GPS (Gimp Paint Studio) and part of the package is a collection of brushes. With GPS, if you don't want your Gimp setup to change, don't install any files with rc in their name. The brushes go into your Gimp's user folder and I don't know where that is in Linux.

Go into your Linux package manager search for 'gimp-data-extras'. This package contains extra brushes, palettes, and gradients.

Okay, I looked at the GPS brushes. Those are the sorts of brushes I'm interested in. I downloaded the file but I wasn't sure where to put the files. There is a GIMP folder in my Home folder and one in the File System. And the "rc" thing. I didn't notice any file extensions with that. Did you mean "rc" anywhere in the file names? I'm enclosing a screenshot (there are some files that begin with Sc but none with RC). Thanks.

It's best to use the Home folder for your add-ons unless you have multiple users or are a server.

Sorry, there are no rc files in the brushes folder with GPS - the rc files are with the whole download and are named session rc and something else rc. If its just the brushes you want, just use the brushes folder and nothing else. You will have no problems with that.

Another related tool to consider is, abr2gbr (Linux/Win). It's a command line tool for extracting/converting Adobe PhotoShop ABR and Corel Paint Shop Pro JBR brush files to the GIMP GBR format. Linux package manager should have it.

Odinbc, I'm not a painter. I was looking for more brushes mainly for using the eraser tool. Specifically more brushes with diffuse/soft settings, for kind of blending, feathering edges and stuff. (Like I said, the one gave me a guitar brush and the GPS gave me a shark brush! But they also had some useful stuff.) What would the Photoshop and Corel brushes bring to the mix?

I'm not pushing brushes, only presenting options.

Ha ha. Sorry. I appreciate having options!

iggy: if you're trying to feather edges for blending you could also feather selections or gaussian blur the edges, it's not always easiest and best to use brushes. but if you feel comfortable and happy using the eraser tool for this you might also want to try these things:

1. adjust the opacity of the eraser now and then.
2. make a new brush dynamic that sets "opacity" to "fade", then click "dynamic options" and set "fade length" to a high figure. i know most beginners think this is complicated, but it gives you a lot more options and once you know how to change brush dynamics to suit your project you have a lot more freedom.
3. use the smudge brush a lot where it's needed. i often use the softest of gimp's three default round brushes and drag my smudge line using the edge of that brush, not the center. you can adjust the rate of the smudge easily to suit your needs as well.

if you want to work like a pro, though, you should use layer masks and work on them instead. you have a whole lot more options, since you erase with an ordinary brush and have all the options of setting brush mode as well as brush dynamics.

hope i don't think i'm explaining the obvious once more here, i know you've been referred to lots of tutorials where layer masks are used already, but it's so easy to underestimate the potential of working on a mask!
