I am used to USM in photoshop where the radius is usually set to 0.5 up to abt 1.4
and the amount 100
if you try to do that in gimp you get crazy results, the sliders are calibrated very differently.
I see so many tutorials on photoshop that go into suggestions for the sliders for different types of photos, landscape or portrait , high res. or low.
any suggestions of what I should be aiming at or suggest a tutorial?

I'm not aware of any specific tutorials,
which address the issue of USM in Gimp and different photo quality and size.

As a suggestion...
Have you looked over the Gimp Documentation for the Unsharp Mask plugin?

https://docs.gimp.org/en/plug-in-unsharp-mask.html

yes I looked at that,
it's ok it's just the amount slider kind of freaked me out and the high radius I see people use in gimp but from reading a few posts on the web I see it's easy.
the radius acts the same, but the amount in Gimp 0.5 = 50% in photoshop
and 1.00 = 100%
so now i have a better feel for it.

You're right,
there does seem to be much difference in the effective radius.
However,
I do believe that the amounts do average about the same.
;)

In G'MIC there is a USM-filter also. Under Details: Sharpen [unsharp mask].
Maybe you can try that filter also. I don't have photoshop, so I don't know how to compare the settings and results.
