How did they get this text effect?

GIMP Version: 2.8.14
Operating System: Linux
GIMP Experience: Intermediate Level

What would I do to get this faint texture effect in "WORLD GONE BY"? Thanks.

I couldn't get the effect I think has been done. Looks like some of the text has been cut out showing the background.
However I did this which may not be what you are looking for -
Background as you want it. Then text. Then alpha to selection and run G'MIC dirty

Looks a little like a Grunge effect so you may want to start with a grunge font in which case you shouldn't have to do any thing but put your text in.

On the text i ran Filters/Render/Clouds/Fog, then i created a selection from the new Clouds layer and cleared the text layer so that pats of the background were visible through the text

On your text layer:

- Layer>Mask>Add layer mask and initialize to white
- Filters>Render>Clouds>Plasma and use a rather high turbulence
- Use Brightness/Contrast to tune (you likely want more brightness and contrast)(of course other tools can be used for this: Levels, Curves... or even Threshold but it is a bit brutal)

Another way is use an 'eroded text' type of font.

Thanks Sallyanne and thanks for the links. I love those grunge fonts but I want to stay with my font (I'm using it in the titles of my ebooks) for branding purposes.

Using a grunge or scratch brush on a layer mask is probably the best way to get the effect you want, as it will let you easily play around until you get the exact effect you want.

Of all the different ways this can be accomplished.
I agree with 2-ton's and ofnuts' suggested method.

However,
finding a good distressed font,
as was suggested by rich2005 "eroded text type of font",
and sallyanne's suggestion of a "grunge font".
Could make all other suggestions moot.

Thanks 2-ton. I agree with you but I've had a hard time finding a free brush that would produce that effect. The scratch brushes I found do too much and the splatter brushes just basically produce scattered dots. Any ideas on where I could get a free brush that would do the job? Thanks.

Thanks Wallace. I love those grunge fonts but I've got to stay with my Bebas Neue for branding purposes. As I was asking 2-ton though, I couldn't find a free brush to do the job well. The scratch brushes did too much (the effect is so subtle on that Lehane cover) and the splatter brushes just, well, splattered dots all over. Know of anywhere I could get a free brush that would work better?

Ah, thanks, Wallace. I've actually gotten a few brushes from Deviant Art. Actually two. But both people wanted to link back, which I'm more than happy to do. But if I download a lot of them, I'm never going to be able to keep track of who the brush is connected with, so this guy doesn't ask for that, so that's perfect.
