How to make a thumbnail (SOLVED)

GIMP Version: 2.8.14
Operating System: Windows
GIMP Experience: New User

Baffled again, how can I create a thumbnail? While I'm asking is this the way that folk create such small images while retaining clear definition, the smaller I make my work when creating, I loose the crispness and clarity in Gimp (or are folk using other applications?)?

If you share an example image then we could investigate various options.

The best outcome is probably to design the thumbnail from the outset with it's small size in mind - maybe design a simplified version that doesn't try to include all the detail.

Thanks Kevin, you're helping a real tech newbie, I think I've got it, is this correct - in Gimp - File- save for web - resize. If I create a thumbnail can i resize it back to original size?
I have just tried Reshade which gives great definition on a thumbnail.

If you only need one icon here's a hack; use a screenshot of the icon in your File Manager.
