I need help getting the themes to work. I have downloaded GTK and I have tried running it, but whenever I choose a theme windows says the program has stopped working. can someone help me get a darker theme on my GIMP?

GIMP 2.7.2 As compiled by Partha
Vista (ugh)
Windows says the program has stopped working

Any help would be greatly appreciated,
Willy

I would also be fine with just a different set up, I just need a darker GIMP.

Since GIMP uses the Windows theme by default, another option is to edit your windows theme and use darker colors.
(right click on desktop / Properties/Appearance/Advanced and edit the colors)

Of course, this will affect all of your windows, not just GIMP.

you don't need to install the GTK the GTK needed is already inside gimp (in Windows OS) additional gtk would only install themes on programs that do not exist

you just need to download and install the gimp theme switcher

Please look to this link http://gimper.net/viewtopic.php?t=626

PS that the quicker way
On gimptalk you may found a tutorial on "how to change look of your gimp" but i may summarize here

Locate in Program Files/gimp the GTK folders

Now put the theme in GTK/theme subfolder, BUT THIS IS NO SUFFICENT
themes depend on engines so you need to add the related engine (if is not already included but would be a lucky case )
For that you must find the GTK/engines subfolder and place the engines there

Finally to change theme you must click on the gtk_pref.exe

But the gimpernet pack will do all this automatically, adding in START/ALL PROGRAMS under "gimp" a new entry "gimp themes"
click there to change themes and fonts

Okay I got it!
So I went to my GIMP 2.7 folder and went to Share>GIMP>2.0>Themes>Created A Folder

Then to get the theme I wanted, I went to GTK Preference and just looked at them, found the name of the one I liked.
Then went to Program Files, GTK2-Runtime>Share>Themes>Name of the One you Want,
Copy the file in that folder, and paste it into your new folder.

Open GIMP and then go to Edit Preferences, and then Themes and whatever your folder is named should be there. Click it and it should work :D

HURRAY!

@Rod, with this Pack you were going to upload, would it be all of the sepperate folders and the GTK files inside of them?
My Choice on themes just from names cause searching through is a pain

@Rod, Willy

This is from RobA magic hat, i asked with a PM if he could help me to simplify his shell script to call the theme switcher from the gimp menu

Quote:
#!/usr/bin/env python

from gimpfu import *
import shlex
import subprocess
import os, sys

def plugin_main(image, drawable):
# Command line - Change to match where the theme switcher binary is located
command = "\"C:\\Program Files\\GTK2 Themes\\xxxxxxx.exe\""
args = shlex.split(command)

# Invoke external command
pdb.gimp_progress_set_text ("run XnView...")
pdb.gimp_progress_pulse()
child = subprocess.Popen(args, shell=False)
child.communicate()

register(
"python_fu_runprog",
"Run a program",
"Run a program",
"Rob Antonishen",
"Copyright 2011 Rob Antonishen",
"2011",
"<Image>/Edit/GTK-Preference/Gimp Theme Switcher",
"",
[],
plugin_main,
)

main()

It is not a cool idea ?
Anyway is a Py script so require python

first you need to have the gimp theme thing installed, then that may go in plugin to call the theme thingy i mean the gtk_pref.exe (or its linux analog )

BUT PLEASE NOTE THIS 2 LINES

# Command line - Change to match where the theme switcher binary is located
command ="\"C:\\Program Files\\GTK2 Themes\\xxxxxxx.exe\""

what in yellow should be edited to be adapted to where is your gtk_pref.exe

Okay this setup i have put together allows you to change your pref of themes by just changing a # symbol in your gtkrc file which is included.
I will add all the GTK themes later when i feel better.

Thanks Rob that is a cool script.
This package runs all the themes from the windows install and like i said ill add the GTK themes later.
No download link until further notice and testing

FOLLOW the install instructions in each readme in each folder
Thanks

Another important note is to create a backup of this gtkrc when you update your program.

Alternatively if you want just use Robs script and add these new theme folders and engines to their respective folders in the GTK-Themes directory's lib and themes.You will not need my gtkrc file that way.

I do not have the specified Path for
These DLL files must go in your
C:\Program Files\GIMP-2.0\lib\gtk-2.0\2.10.0\engines  folder

This file must go in the
C:\Program Files\GIMP-2.0\ect\gtk-2.0  folder

I am going to proceed to other folders and hope someone can get back to me on this

Or that one
