Is Windows XP no longer supported? I just did a clean install and it crashes on launch.

Previously, I was using a portable version of GIMP (from portable apps) that was i think 2.8.3.0 or something (i cannot remember the exact number, but the date of download was around 2013).

Does it require any specific directx or NET or such runtimes that i may not have or something?

That is when Microsoft dropped support for Windows XP security updates. I don't see how that is relevant here :S Unless there is a statement from GIMP that says they too are dropping support.

The link you posted is the requirements for the unix / linux versions.
If you click on the windows link then it goes to this page: gimp org downloads
which has no information at all about which versions of windows are supported by GIMP itself.

I have just asked on IRC and the reason appears to be that GIMP is now compiled requiring SSE3 and my processor only supports up to SSE2.
So, nothing to do with Windows XP itself.

Just posting in case anyone else has the same issue (ie unless they compile for SSE2 and below then there is no way to get it to work).

From reading the bug report it seems that you can get it to work using the -d parameter so that it does not load any data. Of course this means that part of GIMP's functionality will not work - from reading, they mentioned something to do with brushes.

Basically, one tiny plugin or smaller part that gimp loads has been compiled to require SSE3 and if you disable the loading of it then GIMP will load (although you will probably be missing functionality).

Whether they will change it in future versions to remove this requirement I do not know.

SSE3 is over 10 years old (2004). If your computer is that old, it has likely other limitations that make it unfit for modern Gimp (RAM size, disk size and speed...). I don't think they will ever remove that requirement. The next step would be on the contrary to go forward and drop 32-bit support.

PS: Gimp is open source, you can always get the source and compile a version that doesn't require SSE3 (or let a competent programmer do it).

If you read the bug report it sounds like they are open to compiling without SSE3.
It only seems like it's some brushes or something that are the offending piece. A small add-in at least, as you can run it with the -d parameter.

I wasn't demanding anything be done at all, just providing information for others who may have the same issue.
I am well aware of how old my computer is and that I need a new one :/
