where are brush favorites in gimp ?

OS Version: linux mint 18 xfce
GIMP Experience: Basic Level

Hi im coming from krita, and im trying to get more used to using gimp ,but i have a lot of gimp brushes + mypaint brushes , i have certain favorite brushes that i use often but the problem is its hard finding them when i switch.Does anyone here know if there is a feature in modern gimp where you can add favorite brushes so that you can select them faster without have to scroll through and look hard for them each time?

You might try Add on Manager. You make separate folders for your brushes and just call up the ones you want.

You could try same as Gimp 2.8.x and filter the brushes.

I use a portable Gimp 2.9.5, a linux appimage and to save delving into ~/.config/GIMP/2.9/ I created folders in my home partition for brushes / scripts / plugins and added these to the Gimp preferences. The brushes folder shows up in the brushes filter. Perhaps, several folders for different categories of brush can be used.

I have not tried for mypaint brushes, worth an experiment though.

I havn't seen anything like this before,i have almost no understanding of reading what you wrote, I don't have any idea what a delving or a ~/ is , i was hoping there would be a straight-forward method like right-clicking and adding to favorites ,drag drop or something similar in that manner.I wonder why gimp doesn't have this yet .
But I realized that i only use and need like maybe 9-10 brushes , most of which are mypaint brushes,atcually thats where my clutter problems are , is there a way to delete all but 9 or so brushes ? or will gimp re-spawn them ?
im glad i found out from you that there is a gimp appimage ,the appimage is more stable and doesnt crash when i rotate/transform image like the gimp i have installed , and its same version too ,i dont get it

~ is linux shorthand for your home partition. Gimp 2.9.5 uses a hidden folder ./config/GIMP/2.9 for your settings and folders for your personal brushes / scripts / plug-ins / patterns ..and all the rest

Nothing that very simple but not difficult once you understand how Gimp works.

Best not to delete anything.
What you need to do, is make a new folder in your Gimp profile. Copy the mypaint pairs of files - the preview png and the myb file to the folder. Then set up the new folder in Edit -> Preferences -> Folders -> MyPaint Brushes

The appimage is one way of having both Gimp 2.8.18 and Gimp 2.9.5 installed at the same time. It is the same source as you use in Mint, the ubuntu ppa.
I would not worry about it, use what you have.

neato, this makes it perfectly clear! now i can get what i want , it actually workswith mypaint brushes, and i think i can do something similar with gimp 2.6, and cool english accent, , good day to you sir !

Here is a simple solution
in your user-folder>brushes create a new folder, e.g. Favourites and place your brushes inside (in my case skull brushes).

refresh your brushes
select this

select Favourites

only my skull brushes will appear in the brush dialogue

@ Graechan, I did that, followed your instructions and it only seems to add a tag?I refreshed the folder, shut down gimp and re-opened it. Refreshed the brushes using :refresh

and nothing looks different

This feature has been built into gimp for some time, I'll explain how it's used as standard in the gimp brushes folder shown below↓

Click on the 'folder select icon' to bring up all your folders

When you click on the folders icon you will bring up all the folder names

Now select the 'Basic' folder and all/only the brushes in the basic folder will appear

Now if you select outside the brushes dialogue it will still tell you that only your Basic brushes are selected

Please note if you add folders do so in your userfolder/brushes folder not in gimps folder (the result is the same)
Note additional folders can also be created inside your patterns, gradients and palettes folders and will work in the same manor

Thanks for letting me know it works I find this feature very useful with patterns, and have combined it with the 'Addon collection manager' to make it easier to locate brushes,patterns, gradients and palettes that are added via the manager

Sorry for being a pain. Can this also be done with primary Gimp Brushes? I have just categorised the ones I have added but not them yet. If it can, will it impact scripts if I move them. Which ones shouldn't I move?
Looks like they already are categorised. I have a few butterfly ones and animal etc that I would like to categorise.

All of gimps default brushes are already categorized, despite being categorized in separate folders all brushes are available to be called by scripts and plugins. placing brushes in separate folders only affects the brush display screen
